Since this is a writing blog, I should probably post about writing once in a while. And this is what happened today and I’m still steamed about it, so you get to hear about it too…
There is a little back story you have to suffer through first. This client hired me through elance in late February, and I won’t mention names because I don’t want them to get attention. One person was the contact, I did the work, I was supposed to be paid weekly. Welllllll, that happened the first three weeks. Then the excuses came out….the bank messed it up….there was a typo…blah blah blah. As of two weeks ago, the outstanding balance was $600, which for what the job was, was a lot f money. After back and forth promises of money for one week, I said no more work until they paid in full.
Then the excuses poured in again…it’s our new year here, everyone is on vacation. Fine. Then the cyclone – OK, they are in Phuket, so I let them have that one. They promised money on Thursday…nothing. Ignored emails, IMs…When the jerkwad finally replied to my IM Friday night, he said there was a typo in my name and it would go out again Saturday morning.
Nothing Saturday morning. And they are 7 hours ahead, so we have time difference problems too.
I am a very patient person…too patient by most standards. So, when yesterday and this morning’s IMs went unanswered, I snapped. Too many idiots, too many assholes and too many liars to deal with lately and I snapped. The ultimatum went out. Pay by noon or else the matter was being turned over to collections blah blah blah. Real scary threat, I know.
And we all know collections across continents doesn’t do shit. So, I did one better. This client and the job was blogging, which means I have my own login ID and password and access to the content on their site since I posted it. MY content which was building their site, getting hits, visitors and revenue for them.
Or at least it was.
Since they didn’t pay for the content, it was still under my copyright. I owned the rights to allllll of that work getting their site attention. Until I took it all down. All 110 posts – well over 25 hours of work – down. Deleted. Gone from their site. Vanished without a trace.
And I made sure to do it when it was after hours their time, since they had such a problem figuring out my working hours. They won’t know it is gone for approximately 3 hours…or 1 AM our time. I’m even considering staying up to see when they do discover it missing, how fast it takes them to find me.
Except I’ll be gone and ignore THEIR IM’s. Yeah, I might be out $600 with them, but I saved the content. It will be sold elsewhere, and they can’t have it. Losers.
I’m not a spiteful person, but it felt good this time.
